Desperately want a car

seriously, I cant stand the pollutants emit from innumberable cars while walking along the street and waiting at the bus station. More horribly, I gotta squeeze myself into the bus and stand amidst horrendously jamed crowds for a while. wah liao eh.......

Rui, my old n gd frid, was here with me last weekend. We havent seen each other for ard half a year. He is waiting for his visa to France in BJ. We had tasty dinner together at Master Kong and Tokyo Niche. afterwards, we caught a flick blood brothers which really let me down. the story is  cliche and predictable, even sexy Qi Shu and good-looking buddies--Yep Liu, Chen Chang, and Daniel Wu cant salvage the failure. I would rather the film is not produced by John Woo who claimed that it is his first come-back movie.

Then we had a peek at the mini cooper. Surprisingly, the price is not that high as we expected, even just one thrid of our anticipated price. I think Rui is seriously considering to put his hands on it once he gets the license in France. He also wants a laptop, so we walked into the HL electronics market. I persuasively repeated that only Thinkpad as well as Mac is acceptable and do not touch HP, haha:)

this fall, I surely will see Rui standing in the securities exchange hall and staring at the big screen in France. wish him good luck with it, haha:)

A trip to Shandong Province

I am right back from Shandong province where i have travelled for ard 3 days. the trip is exciting but really tiring, especially the Mt. Taishan part.

my fist leg is Qufu where the renowed Confucius was born. I visited the confucius temple, house, and the cemetery. the best part is the confucius temple where various emperors paid honor to Confucius. what did impressed me is the elaborate pillars inscribed with powerful loong (龙), which was said to be better than the ones in the Forbidden City.

the next stop is Mt. Taishan. I and bunny climb up Taishan on foot, which was later proven to be a really really tough job, though the views along the road are awesome. when we arrived at the top of Taishan, we found a rock to  overlook the whole Lu kingdom, which is quite similar to the rock in the lion king. we felt great standing on the rock and watching down all the lower hills, though it is a bit dangerous. afterwards, we had dinner at a restaurant near the top. the price is bloody exorbitant. we paid more than 100 for 20 yuan's worth of carp. Then, we took the cable car down to the foot of Taishan. we got nice views from the cabin and enjoyed the relaxing 5-minute trip down.

the third day, we gave a visit to Jinan which is the capital of Shandong. we went to the well-known Baotu sping, which is weak now coz of the fallen underground water level in Jinan. but the park is very nice, studded by a large amount of springs and pavilions. Then we moved to the last attraction- Daming Lake, where we saw the most beautiful lotus. we also lit some incense sticks to get blessings from respectful buddhas.

We took the fast train back to Beijing. it is the very first time for us to take the D-train which move at a pace of 200 km/hr. the seat is very comfortable and the food on the train is ok.

Say goodbye to Edward Yang (杨德昌)

Sad news comes from Beverly Hills this morning as news breaks that Edward Yang, responsible for such acclaimed films as the Cannes Film Festival winner Yi Yi.
The director first drew praise in 1991 with his film A Brighter Summer Day, which took place in 1950s Taipei and followed Elvis obsessed teenagers who become wrapped up with gangsters.
Yang, who was actually a American citizen and lived in Los Angeles, died of complications from colon cancer.
His next film an animated feature called The Wind was set to be a collabration with action star Jackie Chan.

I do think Yang is a talented filmmaker. Amongst his works, gu ling jie shao nian sha ren shi jian (牯岭街少年杀人事件) is my favorite, combining violence with love. the film told me the brutality of life, shocked me severely at the finale.

We lost another master, whoes works will be remembered forever.

Pay homepage to Blackie--Ke Shouliang

I just re-viewed classy Hongkong triad movie-Goo waak jai (Young and Dangerous). Among the idolized series, on the 6th part, Blackie was beat to death on the street by a mass of gangsters, lying awash in blood, which reminds me of the "real" death of him just a few years ago.... I really feel sad for Blackie, whose songs and films were soooo great.....

Farewell Blackie......

Who Can Save Our Children? - Fathers of 400 Enslaved Children

A group of fathers from Henan province recently ventured to brick kilns in Shanxi province to rescue their children, who were abducted and illegally forced to work as slaves. There were an estimated 2,000 children, about 400 of whom were from Henan.

After rescuing around 40 children, the fathers’ rescue efforts were obstructed by the local police, who were supposed to protect innocent people but instead were in alliance with the kiln owners. Exhausting all reasonable approaches and obtaining no responses from the government, the fathers had to seek help from the Internet. They published a moving open letter on June 7 on Tianya Club, one of the most-viewed Chinese online forums. The letter brought about an outburst of public opinion supporting the rescue campaign and calling for the central government to interfere. On June 13, Wang Zhaoguo , member of the China Communist Party politburo, expressed his concern over the issue. One of the owners was immediately put on the wanted list by the police as a class B criminal.

Below is the letter posted on Tianya, we will never foget this event........

My blueberry nights ushers in the Cannes Film Festival

I am crossing finger for wong kar wai's my blueberry nights, woohoo, it is coming!!!!!!

this is an excerpt from NYT:

Wong Kar-wai, the Hong Kong director who was president of the jury at the 2006 festival, opened this year’s event with “My Blueberry Nights,” a romantic confection that begins with a lingering shot of vanilla ice cream melting into the gooey filling of a blueberry pie. The film, Mr. Wong’s first English-language feature, takes place in a postcard America of diners and red neon signs, a land of heartbreak and second chances where folks play poker and drink whiskey and subsist on cheeseburgers, pork chops and, in at least one case, quite a bit of that pie.

The pie eater is Norah Jones, the singer and songwriter, who makes her screen debut as Elizabeth, a New Yorker on the rebound from a long relationship with an unfaithful, unseen and unnamed boyfriend. She takes refuge in a homey restaurant managed by Jeremy (Jude Law), where there is always a lot of blueberry pie left over at closing time.

After they strike up a late-night, pastry-fueled friendship, sealed with a lovely, drowsy screen kiss, Elizabeth takes off on a journey that leads her from Memphis to Nevada, through a series of waitress jobs, slightly altered identities (she’s Lizzie in one place, Beth in another) and encounters with other lonely souls. These include an alcoholic policeman (David Strathairn), his estranged wife (Rachel Weisz) and a gambler (Natalie Portman) who seems to talk a better game than she plays.

Over the years Mr. Wong has acquired a passionate following — one that occasionally manifests cultlike tendencies — for his sensual visual style and oblique narratives of erotic longing. “My Blueberry Nights” may strike his devotees, and skeptics as well, as both a notable departure and a variation on his characteristic themes. He is still interested in the mysterious nature of desire and the effects of time and distance upon it. But the setting, the language and the conventions of English-language screen acting give this movie, for better or worse, a decided air of novelty.

Mr. Wong’s other recent films, like “In the Mood For Love” and “2046” (both shown at previous festivals here) unfold mainly in the narrow hallways and cramped rooms of hotels and apartment buildings in crowded Asian cities, where the men dress in dark suits and the women wear flower-printed cheongsams.

Those movies are dense with color and shadow. In “My Blueberry Nights,” shot in CinemaScope by Darius Khondji, the colors are still rich and smoky, but the wider format gives the compositions a looser, more open feeling. And the characters, contemporary Americans (and one British expatriate), are correspondingly relaxed, even in their moments of distress. Whereas their Asian counterparts in other Wong Kar-wai movies — Gong Li, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Maggie Cheung — show emotion through masks of mystery and reserve, Ms. Jones and her co-stars invite and promise easy empathy.

Whether they entirely earn it is another question, one likely to be batted around as “My Blueberry Nights” continues on its journey to screens around the world. (It will be released in the United States by the Weinstein Company.) One of the more annoying tics of the kibitzers at Cannes (including this correspondent) is the habit of rendering authoritative, often hyperbolic snap judgments before the final credits are done. Thus, while the soundtrack music from “My Blueberry Nights,” which includes American institutions like Otis Redding, Ruth Brown and Ry Cooder, was still echoing in the Palais des Festivals, you could hear dyspeptic grumbling about Mr. Wong’s American venture, along with a certain amount of defensive praise.

There will be plenty of time to sort it out. My initial impression is of a sweet, insubstantial movie that might have been more exciting — more meaningful — to make than it is to see. At the press conference after the morning screening, though, not everyone involved in making the film had seen it yet. Ms. Jones said she had watched the trailer, part of which Mr. Law had also glimpsed before being summoned to meet the assembled journalists. Mr. Wong, not known for rushing his films to completion, noted that post-production work had finished only a few days before.

As is customary the questions were respectful, and as is also customary the response of the audience at the gala red carpet screening on Wednesday night was loud and appreciative. Decked out in tuxedos and evening gowns, members of that audience were in the mood for delectation rather than debate. And the mood lingered as some of them waited (along with less decoratively attired camp followers) on a narrow sidewalk near the Palais des Festivals, where they shoved their way onto buses marked “Party.”

My holiday in lovely Xiamen

I arrived in Xiamen at night on April 24th with my backpack and sleeping bag (my favorite combo, haha). Fei has rent a room around Xiamen Uni.  So I lived in his room in the first night. We had very nice chat in his tiny room at midnight. but next day in the morning, I was woke up by the annoying noise from outside. what a fuck!!!!! those construction workers start to work and make horrible noise from 6 AM!!!!!!!  I really cannot understand why Fei would rather live here than dormitory on campus, haha. I guess his snore is more dangerous, haha!!!!!

the next day, Fei, Fei'sgf, Wei, Shangshang, and me had a little bbq dinner around Xiamen Uni. Min-style bbq is very different from the rest of China, dry and oil free, haha:)  the topic over the dinner is weird. We were talking about the mental challenged pple and different kinds of phychos. it is very funny, but sometimes kinda scary. After that, we did some grocery shopping, and then we went back to the campus, since i had a very heavy and torturous exam the next day.

On 26th, i finally finished my GRE analytical writing. Woohoo, it is eventually over lah, although it is not gone forever. the paper-based exam is due on June 9th, and I gotta struggle for that over the next month:( The three topics in the exam are not seen before. but thank goodness, they are not that hard. haha, I hope the result is not bad as well.

Over the next few days, I has began to explore the city. I has been to GU Lang Yu islet, Bailuzhou Park, the beach, the stadium, and the beatiful campus. those attractions are really nice and unforgettable. Especially when I climbed up to the top of the Sunlight rock and got the panoramic view of the whole city, the only word I can say is awesome!!!!!!! the view combines the old town and the new city, leaving me precious memories. I also tried numerous local food in Xiamen, like 。。。。。。 there are too many snacks, i cant remember all of them lah. In short, I love most of them.

Shuting, my highshool mate, also came to Xiamen to visit Wei. The day b4 I leave Xiamen, we had seafood at a renowned Da pai dang (大排档). we called it Naikai High School Xiamen Chapter meeting, haha, I was really excited to meet so many good friends in Xiamen!!!!

On 29th, I left Xiamen for Beijing. Really thanks Fei, Shangshang, Qian, Wei, Shuting. I had great time with all u guys in Xiamen. Take care and enjoy ur lives. wish all of u good luck with everything lah!!!!!!!!!!!

I also have some words to YY: your hometown is really suitable for living and work. You are better off coming back and marrying a nice guy here lah, haha:) a few more word to singaporean friends Yujun, Guanghuang, and Sipei: I hope all of you can visit Xiamen one day. I am sure u can find a lot of similarities between Singapore and xiamen (They even use Min dialect to announce news at airport, I cannot follow, maybe u guys can, haha). wish u can find ur roots in mainland:)

Shangshang and Qian at bbq
funny wei eating chicken meat
